Ethics does not need someone to find it a foundation: it needs to return to its sources and regenerate the bond between individual, species and society.
De dónde viene: de Atenas y Antígona a la crisis de los valoresWhere it comes from: from Athens and Antigone to the crisis of values
The chapter opens with Wittgenstein, for whom it is impossible to speak of ethics, and with Kostas Axelos, who sees it as a problem that gives food for thought (p. 21). Morin takes up the trinity of Method 5, discusses Steven Ozment on the mystical source of humanism (p. 23) and uses Julian Jaynes's bicameral mind to explain the moral conscience born in fifth-century Athens (pp. 25–26).
For modernity he summons Kant and his universal ethics, and Machiavelli, who officially separates ethics from politics (p. 27). For the crisis of foundations he cites Ernst Tugendhat, who deems Kant's attempt to ground the imperative in reason a failure, Claude Lefort on the word "value" and Pierre Legendre and his "normative self-service" (p. 30).
Duty is felt as an inner summons, but it also comes from outside, from culture and norms, and from before, from living organization passed on genetically. The three sources cannot be isolated, though they can be distinguished: they meet in the individual, who is at once one hundred percent biological and one hundred percent cultural.
Exclusión e inclusiónExclusion and inclusion
To be a subject is to place oneself at the center of one's own world. A principle of exclusion ensures no one else occupies that place and lies at the root of selfishness; a principle of inclusion lets the I enter a We and lies at the root of altruism. Ethics does not abolish egocentrism: it recognizes it as vital and combines it with its opposite.
With modernity, politics, economics, science and art become autonomous and ethics is privatized. God is absent, the Law is desacralized, responsibility is fragmented. Values occupy the empty place of foundations. For Morin ethics remains an emergence held up only by its own demand, and it depends on the vitality of the loop that produces it.
Three streams, one biological, one individual and one social, flow down separate channels and converge on a single point: the subject, where duty feels like one's own though it comes from further away.
Donde se ven las tres fuentesWhere the three sources show
Cotidiano · los gemelosEveryday · the twins
Two identical twins can have everything in common: genes, upbringing, home, friends. The one thing they do not share is the I. That egocentric place cannot be transferred, and it explains why each may, if it comes to that, sacrifice everything for himself. Yet the same subject can sacrifice himself for the other: there the principle of inclusion is at work.
Biológico · el pajarilloBiological · the fledgling
Morin recalls the fledgling that, on leaving the egg, follows its mother: the bond with the neighbor is original, an inner vital need. Mammal societies show the double face of this heritage: united against the predator, rivals in the fight over females, devoted to their young and sometimes capable of eating them.
Social · la sangre contaminadaSocial · the contaminated blood
Specialization and bureaucratic partitions lock each person into a plot of competence and dilute responsibility. Morin gives two French cases: the contaminated blood affair and the heat wave of summer 2003. No one seemed responsible for the whole, because each link answered only for its fragment. The social source of ethics stops irrigating.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es moral contra éticaIt is not morals versus ethics
Morin accepts the usual distinction: ethics for a supra-individual standpoint, morals for each person's decision. But individual morals depend on an ethics, and ethics empties out without individual morals. The two terms overlap, and he uses them interchangeably when needed.
No es una nueva ética a pedidoIt is not a new ethics on demand
Faced with violence and corruption, a naive demand grows for a new ethics to fill the void. Just as naive is the wish to adapt ethics to the times. Morin proposes a double adaptation in a loop: adapt the times to ethics and ethics to the times, without inventing a code from scratch.
No es la razón puraIt is not pure reason
Duty has something mystical and something possessive: it seems to come from a higher order and imposes itself like a faith. Morin reduces it neither to reason nor to mysticism. The humanism of liberty, equality and fraternity is a symbiosis of rational universality and quasi-mystical faith, a faith that can include doubt.
Each person lives for oneself and for the other dialogically, that is, in a way both complementary and antagonistic. To be a subject is to combine selfishness and altruism. Every look at ethics must recognize the vital character of egocentrism as well as the fundamental potential for the development of altruism.Edgar Morin · El Método 6, p. 23Edgar Morin · Method 6, p. 23 (free translation)
It closes the section "The subjective demand", after describing the subject's double device, the "for oneself" and the "for us". Morin wants to make clear from the outset that his ethics does not condemn egocentrism: it starts from it, because it is vital, and bets on the development of altruism.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
Morin holds that the subject carries within itself the death of the other: the egocentric principle leads Cain to murder. At the same time, it carries love for the other. It is unsettling because there are no good people on one side and bad on the other: the same structure that makes us capable of sacrifice makes us capable of killing a brother.
The individualism that freed us from communal oppression is also a source of heightened egocentrism. Morin sees in the resulting nihilism the cause of regressive returns: totalitarian faith, fundamentalisms, youth gangs that rebuild an ethics of territory, honor and retaliation. Emancipation has a reverse side that cannot be ignored.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
The dilution of responsibility in long decision chains, which Morin illustrates with the contaminated blood, reappears in debates on algorithms, supply chains and health disasters: each link follows its protocol and no one answers for the outcome. Thinking of ethics as reliance forces us to ask who answers for the whole.
Companies and governments that publish value codes illustrate what Morin calls the crisis of foundations: values are proclaimed as if they were enough on their own, though nothing outside upholds them. The alternative he proposes is not a better code but regenerating the responsibility and solidarity that make those values live.
Where does your sense of duty come from, if nothing outside guarantees it anymore?
When did you feel a duty you could not justify but could not disobey either?
Which We do you include at the center of your world, and which do you leave out?
- ¿En qué situación tu egoísmo te resultó vital y no vergonzoso? In what situation did your selfishness prove vital rather than shameful?
For which collective outcome did you feel responsible for only a fragment?
What value do you claim to hold that is not actually sustained by any bond?

If the moral act is reliance, we may ask whether that reliance does not come from further away: from the very origin of the universe.
