Revenge drags revenge behind it; only the one who does not strike back breaks the circle and opens the chance for the other to change.

De dónde viene: del talión a JankélevitchWhere it comes from: from retaliation to Jankélévitch

He moves through Nietzsche, Hobbes, for whom the purpose of punishment is terror, and Beccaria, who grounds prison in protecting the population (p. 140). He then traces forgiveness from the religion of Moses to Jesus, and sets it against Marx's line in The German Ideology (p. 141).

Para lo imperdonable acude a Vladimir Jankélevitch (p. 145) y a Hannah Arendt, que vio en Eichmann un engranaje mediocre de la máquina criminal (p. 146).Literature supplies his cases: Sonia and Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment, Monseigneur Myriel and Jean Valjean in Les Misérables, the peasant in Ninety-Three (p. 143). In politics he cites Mandela and Adam Michnik (p. 144). For the unforgivable he turns to Vladimir Jankélévitch (p. 145) and to Hannah Arendt, who saw Eichmann as a mediocre cog in the criminal machine (p. 146).

Above punishment, magnanimity, gentleness and clemency prepare the way for forgiveness. In 403 BC the democrats of Athens, after the dictatorship of the Thirty, renounced revenge and proclaimed an amnesty. Augustus with Cinna or John Paul II with his attacker show that clemency can morally transform the one who receives it.

Forgiving is not merely renouncing punishment: instead of evil for evil, it returns good for evil. It is an individual act, whereas clemency is often political, and an act of caritas. It rests on two arguments of Jesus: let whoever is without sin cast the first stone, and they know not what they do.

Memoria sin castigoMemory without punishment

No castigar no equivale a olvidar. Not punishing is not the same as forgetting. The Indigenous peoples of the Americas and the descendants of slaves have not forgotten, though their tormentors were never punished. The Memorial association, created by victims of Soviet repression, asked for data and evidence to be gathered, not for convictions. Morin places himself in that line and in Beccaria's: he does not hold an ethics of punishment.

A chain of blows returned, link after link, broken at one link that does not strike back: there revenge loses its engine and another possible story begins.

Morin befriended a man convicted of killing his wife. In prison, that man taught other inmates to read, shared what he knew, pushed them to sit exams and created a cultural center. The ordeal and remorse allowed him, Morin says, to develop the best potentialities of his being.

Biológico · la sangre contaminadaBiological · the contaminated blood

In the contaminated blood scandal, alarming reports from some doctors were not even read, and leading medical authorities did not believe a virus could cause AIDS. Morin then wrote "Look for the irresponsible one": the harm came from accumulated bureaucratic blindness. When guilt dissolves, punishment is derisory and forgiveness unthinkable.

Social · Mandela y el precio chilenoSocial · Mandela and the Chilean price

Mandela understood that punishment or revenge would lead to disaster and brought whites into the nation after his victory. In Spain and Chile, by contrast, leniency toward fallen leaders was the price of peace and democracy; in Chile, Morin writes, an ethical stench remained, because there was no true forgiveness and there could be no forgetting.

En sus palabrasIn his words
“
…el perdón es una apuesta ética; es una apuesta sobre la regeneración de quien ha faltado o fallado; es una apuesta sobre la posibilidad de transformación y de conversión al bien de aquel que ha cometido el mal.…forgiveness is an ethical wager; it is a wager on the regeneration of whoever has erred or failed; it is a wager on the possibility of transformation and of conversion to the good of the one who has committed evil.
Edgar Morin · El Método 6, p. 142Edgar Morin · Method 6, p. 142 (free translation)

It opens the section on the wager of forgiveness, which Morin presents as a crucial point. He grounds it in the fact that human beings are not immutable and can evolve toward better or worse, and illustrates it with lost children who found a beneficial presence in time.

Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable

Morin does not promise that forgiveness works. In Victor Hugo's Ninety-Three, a peasant saves the Marquis de Lantenac, who then has three women shot, and wonders whether a good deed can be a bad deed. Forgiveness also enters the ecology of action and can turn against the one who forgives.

There is a limit Morin does not dodge: before the tortured murder of a child, forgiveness falters. Jankélévitch left two infinities face to face, that of forgiveness and that of the unforgivable, without granting victory to either. What remains is irreparable evil, which Morin calls the disaster of the human condition.

Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today

Truth commissions and restorative justice, which bring victims and offenders together to repair rather than only punish, take up Morin's distinction between memory and punishment. South Africa, which Morin evokes through Mandela, remains one of the most studied cases of that path.

When harm arises from large technical or administrative systems, the hunt for a single culprit can turn into the hunt for a scapegoat. Morin's question, whether we should judge and reform the system instead, arises today with algorithmic failures, industrial disasters and chains of medical errors.
