A highly complex society cannot hold together on just laws alone: it needs each person to carry within the solidarity the community once imposed.
De dónde viene: de la colmena a la nación, y de la nación a la Tierra-PatriaWhere it comes from: from the hive to the nation, and from the nation to Homeland Earth
Luego toma la pareja alemana Gesellschaft/Gemeinschaft: toda sociedad histórica es una mezcla de sociedad y comunidad (p. 164).Morin starts below the human: ants, termites and bees devote themselves automatically to the community, and mammals stand together to hunt and defend themselves (p. 163). He refers to his Lost Paradigm to argue that hominization strengthened the community. Then he takes the German pair Gesellschaft/Gemeinschaft: every historical society is a mixture of society and community (p. 164).
(p. 172). Retoma también su Tierra-Patria (p. 167).The modern nation invented the fatherland, a myth that extends the features of the family to millions (p. 164). In the appendix on cognitive democracy, Morin turns to Pascal and his whole that cannot be known without its parts (p. 171) and to Marx's third thesis on Feuerbach: who will educate the educators? (p. 172). He also draws on his Homeland Earth (p. 167).
The ethics of community possessed the individuals who possessed it: it imposed itself. Today egocentrism and the logic of interest have broken up many traditional solidarities, the extended family has shrunk, and communitarianisms defend identities without restoring the community's hold. That is why self-ethics stops being a private matter: it becomes the path to regaining solidarity and responsibility.
Complejidad y libertadComplexity and freedom
The more complex a society is, the lighter its constraints and the more it benefits from each person's initiatives. But excessive complexity loosens the social bond and ends in disorder. The only safeguard is lived, internalized solidarity. Morin sums it up: "There is a solidarity-complexity-freedom link." Self-ethics then appears as a social virtue, not only an individual one.
If citizens become underproductive, so does democracy, and the other way round. Civic spirit is the sociopolitical virtue of ethics: "If civic spirit withers, democracy withers."
A cycle links individuals and community: each turn regenerates both, and if one side weakens, the other fades too.
At the Café du Commerce you can still argue about the head of state's conduct. But no one at that table can understand what sets off a Wall Street crash or what keeps it from causing a larger crisis, and the experts themselves are divided. Morin sees there a citizen stripped of the right to knowledge.
Biológico · la colmena y la manadaBiological · the hive and the herd
The roots of community reach deep into the living world. Ants, termites and bees feel an automatic devotion to the whole. Mammals compete for food or sex, but become united when it comes to defense or hunting. The human ethics of community extends that earlier solidarity, now with language and myth.
Social · «No matarás» y los cananeosSocial · "Thou shalt not kill" and the Canaanites
Community ethics are universal and particular at once. The commandment "Thou shalt not kill" holds among the Hebrews, but not for the Canaanites the God of Sinai orders slaughtered; murder is a crime within the nation and heroism against the enemy. By their differences there are a thousand moralities; by their form, only one.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es comunitarismoIt is not communitarianism
Morin does not propose shutting ourselves back into the tribe. He notes that today's communitarianisms safeguard collective identities but do not revive community. Nor does he want to erase communities: he asks that they open up and be integrated into a wider one, Homeland Earth.
No es solo buenas institucionesIt is not only good institutions
Democratic institutions can remain standing while democracy deteriorates. Non-participation in civic life is enough to degrade it. A complex society needs just laws, but also responsibility, intelligence, initiative and awareness in its citizens.
No es gobierno de expertosIt is not rule by experts
Technoscience makes political problems esoteric and leaves citizens on the sidelines. Competent experts are incompetent outside their field and make everyone else incompetent. The way out is not more delegation but a cognitive democracy, possible only if knowledge is reformed and made accessible.
They express a pervasive feeling of ethical suffocation. Society feels deprived of ethics because it is sick in its civic spirit. The regeneration of ethics is therefore inseparable from a regeneration of civic spirit, itself inseparable from a democratic regeneration.Edgar Morin · El Método 6, p. 167Edgar Morin · Method 6, p. 167 (free translation)
It closes the section on the democratic loop, after listing the causes of democracies' decline. Morin answers those who call for a "new ethics": the moral deficit we feel is not cured with precepts, but by giving life back to citizen participation.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
Morin admits that the fatherland, the myth that makes brothers of the "children of the fatherland," is also what turns murder into heroism against the enemy. The same force that creates solidarity creates closure. Asking for a community ethics without that border demands something no historical community has fully achieved: an us without a them.
The appendix runs into a logical circle: institutions cannot be reformed without reforming mindsets, nor mindsets without institutions. Morin does not solve it; he trusts that life brings solutions to logically insoluble problems and in teachers' latent vocation. It is a wager, not a program, and he says so.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
Falling turnout, distrust of parties and the feeling that politics is decided far away fit Morin's diagnosis. Citizens' assemblies chosen by lot and participatory budgeting are attempts to restart the second loop: to have democracy once again produce active citizens.
Debates on climate, pandemics or artificial intelligence repeat the Café du Commerce scene: technical decisions that affect everyone and that almost no one can follow. Science communication and the idea of media literacy take up, without naming it, the demand for a cognitive democracy.

If community ethics triumphs only by widening, we must ask which ethics belongs to the whole species: anthropo-ethics.
