De dónde viene: del Monte Verità a la crisálidaWhere it comes from: from Monte Verità to the chrysalis

He reviews the failure of "real socialism" citing Solzhenitsyn (p. 188), Max Weber's "iron cage" and the German Lebensreform, whose pioneers settled on Monte Verità, by the lake (p. 191), and Ivan Illich's conviviality (p. 192).

Cierra con el hombre genérico del joven Marx y con Rousseau (p. 202).For metamorphosis he cites Raimondo Panikkar, who invites us to reconsider six thousand years of History, and argues with Fukuyama (p. 199). He turns to Hölderlin, "where danger grows, the saving power also grows," and to Giraudoux's Electra, who calls Dawn the day when all is lost (p. 201). He ends with the young Marx's generic man and with Rousseau (p. 202).

The reforming paths of the past failed because they were followed separately and excluded one another. Morin proposes combining the reform of society and civilization, the reform of mind through education, the reform of life and ethical reform, plus a reformed science. Each needs the others: they must be thought of in a recursive loop where each reform is product and producer.

La ética no se reforma solaEthics is not reformed alone

Morin is not looking for an "ethics adapted to our time": he wants to adapt our time to ethics. But he knows that isolated exhortations have the uselessness of moral lessons. "Ethical reform cannot be solitary": centuries of preaching goodness have been fruitless. It can only happen within a poly-reform of humanity.

A metamorphosis is inconceivable before it happens: the wing would have seemed impossible to the reptile, and walking upright to the four-handed ape. For Morin this observation is a principle of hope. The closer catastrophe comes, the more possible metamorphosis becomes. It will not be only unconscious: it will need human consciousness and ethical regeneration.

Cotidiano · del fast food al slow foodEveryday · from fast food to slow food

The tastelessness of industrial food sparked the search for "natural" or "organic" products; fast food sparked slow food. Many city dwellers live by the clock during the week and in freedom on weekends, like Mauss's Eskimos, who changed gods with the seasons. These are scattered seeds of a reform of life.

Biológico · la oruga y el fetoBiological · the caterpillar and the fetus

In the chrysalis, the caterpillar destroys itself while the butterfly builds itself, keeping its identity and gaining the capacity to fly. Each of us lived something similar: we passed through a fetal stage like a quasi-fish in a watery environment before becoming land-dwelling humans. Those metamorphoses are repetitive, almost programmed.

Social · cinco lugares, hace diez mil añosSocial · five places, ten thousand years ago

Ten thousand years ago there were only small hunter-gatherer societies, without State or cities. In the Near East, the Indus, China, Mexico and Peru, societies became interconnected and historical society was born, with agriculture, State and cities. An extraterrestrial observer would have judged it impossible. Not everything was progress, but there was metamorphosis.

Edgar Morin · El Método 6, p. 200Edgar Morin · Method 6, p. 200 (free translation)

It appears in the chapter "Ethical hope: metamorphosis," just as Morin asks what the term means. He uses the chrysalis to show that a radical transformation does not destroy identity: it reorganizes it. From there he moves to human history and the possibility of a meta-humanity.

Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable

Metamorphosis requires the caterpillar's self-destruction. Morin says that the closer catastrophe comes, the more possible metamorphosis becomes, and that hope can come from despair. It is a hope that does not exclude disaster and guarantees nothing: the same crisis that opens the way out can close it.

Morin raises without resolving whether it would be ethical for biology to improve humans into a metanthrope, assuming the dangers of genetic and brain manipulation were ruled out. He cites Jean-Marie Lehn: the man who modifies man is contained in man. He only demands that this possibility go together with ethical reform.

Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today

The cooperatives, fair trade, organic farming and local economies that Morin lists as scattered creative processes keep growing today, mostly at the margins. His diagnosis still holds: sketches abound, but they are not yet linked to one another.

Debates on human enhancement, gene editing and brain interfaces have made the question of the metanthrope concrete. Morin's demand that no technical transformation of the human go without ethical reform matches that of many current bioethics committees.
