Ética y políticaEthics and politics
An ethics without strategy has no hands; a politics without ethics devours the ends it claimed to serve.
De dónde viene: de Antígona a Max WeberWhere it comes from: from Antigone to Max Weber
Retoma también la trinidad Libertad-Igualdad-Fraternidad y sus contradicciones (p. 90).The chapter opens with Paul Ricoeur and his ethical aim of the good life with and for others in just institutions (p. 89). Morin recalls that the antagonism between ethics and politics revived in all its radicalness in the twentieth century, with the young Scholls against Nazism and Solzhenitsyn and Sakharov against Soviet power (p. 89). He also returns to the trinity Liberty-Equality-Fraternity and its contradictions (p. 90).
For the central dilemma he turns to Max Weber: the ethics of conviction and the ethics of responsibility complement each other and together make up the authentic human being (p. 91). He cites Péguy against a morality without hands (p. 92), Sinyavsky (p. 92), Joan of Arc and the Dalai Lama (p. 93), and refers to his own books on a politics of man and a politics of civilization (p. 96).
Complementarias y antagonistasComplementary and antagonistic
The great ethical aims need a strategy, that is, a politics; and politics needs a minimum of ethics without being reduced to it. Dissolving ethics into politics yields pure cynicism; making politics the servant of ethics is unthinkable. What remains is a dialogical relationship, made of difficulty, uncertainty and sometimes contradiction.
Convicción y responsabilidadConviction and responsibility
Responsibility without conviction degenerates into opportunism and ends up irresponsible; conviction without responsibility leads to powerlessness or failure. No one knows in advance which will degrade the other. That is why politics is the most difficult of the arts, and it can only be navigated with the conviction to take on responsibility and the responsibility to safeguard conviction.
Realista y utopistaRealist and utopian
Banal realism adapts to the immediate and ignores possibilities; banal utopianism ignores impossibilities. Morin distinguishes the utopia of perfect harmony, which cannot be achieved, from the one that holds possibilities still impossible: ending hunger, abolishing war between nations. Being realistic in the complex sense means knowing that reality hides possibilities still invisible.
A path of means that bends and ends up moving away from the end that justified it: in politics, action escapes its author and means can turn into ends.
Barbarity is not only found between nations, religions or ideologies. Morin also sees it between individuals in the same family, the same building or the same company, eaten away by mutual ignorance, ill will and enmity. That is why the ultimate political question is an ethical one: how to leave behind our civilized barbarity in everyday life.
Morin describes crises as in any organized system: rising uncertainty, deregulations that let deviations grow, disorganization that may give way to a regressive reorganization, less complex, or a progressive one, more complex. That is why in a crisis ethical degeneration and regeneration coexist: people look for a scapegoat and, at the same time, awareness awakens.
Social · la locura lúcida de los SchollSocial · the lucid madness of the Scholls
The young Scholls, isolated in triumphant Nazi Germany, ended up beheaded with an axe; Sinyavsky denounced Stalinism and was jailed at once. To realist observers it was sheer madness. Morin replies that this unrealistic madness was lucid and necessary: it bore witness to the ethical imperative, encouraged resistance and made the future fruitful.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es angelismoIt is not angelism
An ethics of principles that fails to engage with reality becomes angelism: pure, but powerless. Morin does not despise principles; he asks that they come with strategy, with wagers and with knowledge of conditions.
No es cinismo realistaIt is not realist cynicism
A realism without principles, which accepts every accomplished fact, becomes cynicism. Moreover, banal realism ignores that reality is worked on by underground forces, invisible at first, that tend to transform it. Whoever merely adapts to the immediate abandons ethics in the name of a reality that is already changing.
No es la sociedad armoniosaIt is not the harmonious society
Morin does not promise a pacified society. The good society can only be complex: it embraces diversity, does not eliminate antagonisms or the difficulties of living, but involves more connection, understanding, consciousness, solidarity and responsibility. What is impossible for now is not the same as what is impossible forever.
Ethics and politics can be neither split apart nor merged. The great ethical aims most often need a strategy, that is, a politics, and politics needs a minimum of ethical means and aims, without thereby being reduced to ethics.Edgar Morin · El Método 6, p. 89Edgar Morin · Method 6, p. 89 (free translation)
These are the first lines of the chapter, right after the Ricoeur epigraph. Morin sets the frame for everything that follows: the relationship between ethics and politics can only be posed in terms that are at once complementary, competing and antagonistic, without one absorbing the other.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
Morin accepts that, as long as absolutely sovereign nation-states exist, we are condemned to make compromises: France can neither break with China nor simply accept the situation. It is uncomfortable to admit that ethics in politics is rarely pure, and even more so not to know where necessary compromise ends and complicity begins. He himself leaves the question open.
On resistance he is severe: State terror can provoke a terrorism that strikes populations indiscriminately, and when that component becomes essential, the moral degradation of the oppressor enters the soul of the resister. It unsettles anyone who would like a just cause to sanctify all its means.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
Morin warned that the return of torture in the wars of the twenty-first century was the unmistakable sign of a barbaric regression at the heart of civilization. Today's debates on humanitarian law, war crimes and the treatment of prisoners extend that alarm: when effectiveness justifies any means, politics loses all limits.
The tension between conviction and responsibility runs through every public decision: governments that promise principles and manage concessions, movements afraid of losing their purity if they negotiate. Morin's reading, inherited from Weber, suggests not choosing one pole but holding both, knowing that wager and strategy do not eliminate uncertainty: they settle into it.

If the principles of self-ethics hold supreme in politics, we must go down to the place where they begin: the ethics of self to self.
