AutoéticaSelf-ethics
Resistir a la propia barbarie interiorResisting one's own inner barbarity
Before judging others, ethics begins by looking at itself: the nearest barbarity is the one we carry within.
De dónde viene: de Séneca y Darwin a EhrenbergWhere it comes from: from Seneca and Darwin to Ehrenberg
La responsabilidad, recuerda, es propia de un individuo-sujeto con una autonomía siempre dependiente (p. 109).Self-ethics is, for Morin, a historical emergence: it arises when the ethics embedded in religion, family and city erode (p. 99). He draws on Alain Ehrenberg, for whom individualism is also the fruit of the emancipation of the masses, and on Westermarck's ethical subjectivism (pp. 99–100). Responsibility, he recalls, belongs to an individual-subject whose autonomy is always dependent (p. 109).
Discute la moralina con Nietzsche y Clément Rosset (pp. 107–108) y las virtudes con Comte-Sponville y Montaigne (p. 110).For self-examination he cites Jung, who diagnoses an immense lack of introspection, and Paul Diel, who sought to rehabilitate introspection (p. 102); Seneca and his maxim on hating those we have wounded, and Darwin's golden rule (p. 103). He discusses self-righteous moralizing with Nietzsche and Clément Rosset (pp. 107–108) and the virtues with Comte-Sponville and Montaigne (p. 110).
AutoexamenSelf-examination
Our civilization favors the outer world and hands the exploration of the inner one to psychiatrists or psychoanalysts. Morin asks for introspection to be rehabilitated, completed by both friendly and unfriendly eyes in a self-and-other examination. Its traps are many: blind spots, self-deception, selective memory, self-justification. That is why it should be taught from primary school, like physical education.
Autocrítica y recursiónSelf-criticism and recursion
Everyone has an egocentric core that cannot be removed; we even need a callus of indifference so as not to be undone by the pain of the world. What must be resisted is closure. Self-criticism fights self-justification, and ethical recursion consists in evaluating our evaluations, judging our judgments and criticizing our criticisms.
Honor y responsabilidadHonor and responsibility
Honor ennobles egocentrism: it keeps an unblemished self-image, but according to norms one has adopted oneself, not out of social pressure. It asks us to keep our word and not to separate our lives from our ideas. Responsibility, nourished by solidarity, makes us answer for our acts, though not for how they are interpreted or for their consequences.
A figure looking at itself discovers in the reflection a shadow that must be contained: self-ethics begins by recognizing one's own barbarity, not by denying it.
Donde la sombra aparece en el espejoWhere the shadow shows in the mirror
In Miami, anger-management courses were set up to teach people to spot the first signs of irritation and back off. They are aimed at schoolchildren, parents, employees, police officers and offenders. For Morin they prove that self-examination and self-criticism can be taught, and that a quarrel is a loop that feeds itself.
Darwin carefully noted every fact that contradicted his results, because experience had taught him that such facts are forgotten more easily than favorable ones. Morin cites him as an antidote to selective memory: the brain works like a machine for declaring itself innocent, and it must be countered with method and persistence.
In traditional moralities, honor is dictated by society's norms and prohibitions: the defeated Japanese general feels an imperative duty to commit harakiri. In self-ethics, honor is personal: one preserves it for oneself, according to norms one has adopted and taken on. It remains demanding, but it is no longer an outside command.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es egoísmoIt is not selfishness
The individualism of our civilization is not only a victory of selfishness over civic spirit. With Ehrenberg, Morin also sees it as an emancipation that places the responsibility for our acts in ourselves. Self-ethics is born of that autonomy, but it must keep returning to the altruistic principle and to solidarity.
No es una lista de virtudesIt is not a list of virtues
Unlike Aristotle, Morin does not center ethics on the exercise of the virtues, though he does not disdain them either. Instead of a catalogue, he proposes gathering the virtues of every age: childhood curiosity, youthful aspiration, adult responsibility, the discernment of maturity and the experience of old age.
No es delegar en el terapeutaIt is not delegating to the therapist
Morin does not reject psychoanalysis; he asks us to use the achievements of its founders while distrusting their dogmatisms and reductionisms. What he criticizes is the habit of entrusting others with exploring one's own mind. Others help us know ourselves, but they do not exempt us from self-examination, which is long work and our own.
The central ethical problem, for each individual, is that of their own inner barbarity. To overcome this barbarity, self-ethics constitutes a true psychic culture, more difficult but more necessary than physical culture.Edgar Morin · El Método 6, p. 101Edgar Morin · Method 6, p. 101 (free translation)
These are the opening sentences of the chapter "Psychic culture", just before the self-ethics table listing self-examination, self-criticism, honor, recursion and resistance to moralizing. Morin names both the problem and the tool: inner barbarity, and a gymnastics of the mind comparable to that of the body.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
Morin asks us to banish the insults with which we dismiss our opponents, and argues that a minimum of rigor should forbid us from speaking of an opponent's good or bad faith. It is uncomfortable because it takes away a daily satisfaction: declaring the other guilty. Each time we denounce the liar, he says, we may be refusing a truth that offends us.
He also acknowledges an aporia with no way out: he cannot deny the irresponsibility of humans marked by their imprintings and swept along by the whirlwinds of history, nor the responsibility for their bad acts. Neither determinism nor freedom can be refuted. Whoever seeks a clear rule to blame or absolve finds here a contradiction one has to live in.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
Mindfulness, meditation and therapy have become mass practices. Morin already saw the crisis of civilization pushing people toward yoga, Zen and psychotherapies in search of extra soul. His proposal adds something: extra consciousness, with self-examination and self-criticism, so that well-being does not replace ethics.
The culture of outrage on social media rewards what Morin calls moralizing: denouncing, blaming, blacklisting the opponent without refuting them. His remedy, self-vigilance and ethical recursion, is slow and unspectacular. But it offers something denunciation does not: a way of changing that begins with oneself.
