Ética de religaciónEthics of reliance
We are separate from one another, yet we can be reconnected: evil is born of separation without a bond, the good binds again.
De dónde viene: de Dostoievski y Antelme a la tolerancia de BohrWhere it comes from: from Dostoevsky and Antelme to Bohr's tolerance
The chapter opens with a question from Dostoevsky: why are we not all brothers with our brothers (p. 113). Morin returns to the subject's double device, egocentric and altruistic, and from it derives the imperative of reconnection (p. 114). Its first pillar is the axiom of Robert Antelme, deported by the Nazis, and the recognition between two consciousnesses that Hegel formulated (pp. 115–116).
For tolerance he distinguishes three degrees: Voltaire's, the democratic one and that of Niels Bohr, for whom the opposite of a profound idea is another profound idea; Proust, in Jean Santeuil, lends him the part of truth that has gone mad (pp. 116–117). He then cites Von Foerster on freedom, Lichtenberg on friendship and Tagore on love (pp. 117–118).
Diabolus means the one who separates, and that devil lives in each of us because we are distinct individuals. Excessive separation is perverse in science, which can no longer reconnect bodies of knowledge, and among humans when community, solidarity, friendship and love do not offset it. For Morin, our civilization suffers from a shortage of reconnection.
The first demand is to cast no one out of humanity, not even the executioners. That means not treating the other as an object or as subhuman, and opposing quarantines, blacklists, anathemas and excommunications. Excluding exclusion requires, Morin says, hatred of hatred and contempt for contempt, and recognizing each person as a subject before another subject.
Cinco hilos para tenderFive threads to stretch
Reconnection takes shape in several ethics: courtesy, which recognizes the other as a person; tolerance, which endures the expression of outrageous ideas; freedom, which widens the other's choices; loyalty to friendship, a brotherhood of choice; and love, the fundamental experience that binds, even if it can turn possessive and jealous.
Separate individuals between whom threads of light are stretched, crossing and strengthening each other: each bond does not erase the distance, it makes it livable.
Donde se tiende o se corta el hiloWhere the thread is stretched or cut
Cotidiano · el saludoEveryday · the greeting
Saying good morning, shaking hands, hugging or kissing seem trivial gestures. Morin sees them as signs of recognition: they defuse the other's potential hostility and weave a web of cordiality. That is why the incivility of big cities, which ignores the stranger in trouble, strikes him as a creeping inner barbarism.
Morin compares intolerance with the immune mechanism that refuses whatever is not self: a rejection of what does not fit our ideas and beliefs. The analogy shows that intolerance is not a moral accident but a deep tendency, which only a deliberate ethics can counter.
Social · el camarada que denunciaSocial · the comrade who denounces
Inside the Party Morin felt the warmth of comradeship and learned it was not friendship: when the Apparatus condemned someone, comrades turned their backs and even denounced him as an enemy. A friend, by contrast, is a brother by choice; friendship may demand sacrifices, but never betrayal.
Tres confusionesThree confusions
No es fusión en lo idénticoIt is not fusion into sameness
Reconnecting is not erasing separation: Morin speaks of reconnection within separation. The other remains different and similar at once. True love, he recalls with Tagore, sees the beloved as equal and free; love that absorbs the other into jealous possessiveness has already fallen into the egocentric principle.
No es indiferencia toleranteIt is not tolerant indifference
Tolerance does not mean that nothing matters. It is easy for the indifferent and the cynic, and hard for anyone with convictions. Morin defines it as the suffering of tolerating outrageous ideas without becoming outraged, and as the primacy of argument over intimidation and prohibition.
No es una red de camaradasIt is not a network of comrades
Reconnection is not the same as belonging to a bloc. Ideological comradeship can turn a companion into a false brother. Friendship, by contrast, crosses politics and class: the quality of the person matters more than the quality of their opinions, as Lichtenberg's golden rule asked.
Our civilization separates more than it reconnects. We suffer a shortage of reconnection, and it has become a vital need; it is not merely a complement to individualism, it is also the answer to the worries, uncertainties and anxieties of individual life.Edgar Morin · El Método 6, p. 114Edgar Morin · Method 6, p. 114 (free translation)
It belongs to the section on the imperative of reconnection, right after the claim that the devil is the separator. Morin wants to show that reconnection is not a sentimental luxury: we are in an unknown adventure, and friendship, love and fraternity are the antidotes to anxiety.
Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable
Morin pushes the exclusion of exclusion to the limit: the executioners also belong to humanity. In a note he tells how, in 1942 or 1943, he attended a Berlin Philharmonic concert in Lyon conducted by Furtwängler, which the Resistance was boycotting, and that the ban on performing Wagner always seemed absurd to him.
Third-degree tolerance asks us to admit that the enemy idea contains an included truth. Morin illustrates it with antisemitism, which drives mad the part of truth in a singular destiny. Recognizing that part without yielding to the madness is a risky exercise that many would rather never attempt.
Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today
The imperative of freedom Morin takes from Von Foerster, act so that the other can increase their choices, offers a simple test for institutions, platforms and relationships: do they widen or narrow what the other can decide? It works in parenting, in schools and in the design of public services.
Loneliness and isolation are now discussed as public health problems in several countries. Morin's diagnosis, a civilization that separates more than it reconnects, anticipates that debate and reminds us that the answer is not only technical: it runs through courtesy, friendship and everyday community.
