Misunderstanding lies at the source of all human ills; to understand is to embrace the other with the mind and with feeling.

De dónde viene: de Von Foerster y MacLean a los siete saberesWhere it comes from: from Von Foerster and MacLean to the seven kinds of knowledge

The chapter opens with epigraphs from Heinz von Foerster, Marcel Aymé, Confucius and Pierre Guyotat (p. 121). Morin grounds understanding in his complex anthropology: the double sapiens/demens and Paul MacLean's triune brain, in which reason, affect and drive take turns without a fixed hierarchy (p. 127). For paradigms that exclude one another he borrows Magoroh Maruyama's notion of mindscapes (p. 129).

He cites Daniele Sallenave on indifference toward Palestinians and Victor Hugo on the oppressed who becomes oppressor (p. 130), and closes with his proposal from Seven Complex Lessons (p. 136).

Tres modos de comprenderThree ways of understanding

Objective understanding explains: it gathers data, causes and determinations. Subjective understanding, through projection and identification, grasps what the other lives through, above all their suffering. Complex understanding embraces both and refuses to reduce a person to one trait or one act. Morin stresses the shared prefix: com-prehend and com-plexity mean grasping together.

The ethics of understanding first asks us to see where misunderstanding comes from, and its sources tend to converge: the error inherent in all interpretation, the indifference that forms a mental callus, cultural imprinting, possession by gods and ideas, egocentrism and self-deception, and abstraction which, by quantifying everything, removes the humanity from the human.

Contextualizar al otroPlacing the other in context

Situations bring out potentialities we all carry. Morin imagines that, in our time, Caesar would have been a commendatore and Bonaparte a gendarmerie captain; war, by contrast, brings forth heroes and executioners. He tells of seeing good-natured men turn ruthless inside the Stalinist apparatus and become good-natured again once out: irresponsible and responsible at once.

Two circles closed upon themselves that open and partly overlap: understanding does not merge people, it creates a shared zone where each sees something of the other.

Tres terrenosThree grounds

Donde se aprende o se pierde la comprensiónWhere understanding is learned or lost

Cotidiano · el grumete que no partióEveryday · the cabin boy who never sailed

At sixteen Morin wanted to sail to Greece as a cabin boy and his father forbade it. He knew the refusal came from the love of a father afraid for his only son, and still he held a grudge for a long time. Knowing the other's reasons is not enough: subjective understanding also takes time.

Biológico · los tres cerebrosBiological · the three brains

Following MacLean, Morin describes a paleocephalon of reptilian heritage, source of aggression and drives; a mesocephalon tied to affect and memory; and a cortex that reaches extraordinary development in humans. Since no instance always rules, full and lucid responsibility would make sense only for a being ceaselessly governed by reason.

Morin takes up Alain de Botton's game: in the press, Othello would become "Jealous immigrant kills senator's daughter", and Madame Bovary a compulsive shopper who takes arsenic. Media information reduces to one line what the novel makes understandable by showing the subjectivity and context of each life.

En sus palabrasIn his words
“
Understanding is not justifying. Understanding neither excuses nor accuses. Understanding fosters intellectual judgment, but it does not prevent moral condemnation. Understanding does not lead to the impossibility of judging, but to the need to complexify our judgment.
Edgar Morin · El Método 6, p. 133Edgar Morin · Method 6, p. 133 (free translation)

It comes in the section on the fear of understanding, where Morin attacks an argument he calls obscurantist and which, he says, still prevails among a refined intelligentsia: refusing to understand for fear of excusing. He wants to separate intellectual judgment from moral condemnation without giving up either.

Dónde se vuelve incómodoWhere it gets uncomfortable

Morin writes that Stalin, Beria, Hitler and Himmler were moved by music and loved children and dogs, and that we perceive only their cruel faces. Understanding in this way is unsettling, because it deprives us of the pure monster. He calls it terrible work: whoever understands is left in total asymmetry with the fanatic who understands nothing.

Understanding ends in an aporia: the other is at once irresponsible and responsible. Morin avoids dissolving responsibility into sociological determinism and also avoids implacable moralism, but admits the contradiction cannot be avoided; one can only try to transcend it through magnanimity and forgiveness.

Dónde se usa hoyWhere it is used today

Social media seem to confirm that multiplying communications does not absorb misunderstandings. Reducing someone to one sentence or one mistake, locking them forever in guilt, is the logic Morin describes in a dry formula: misunderstanding produces an enormous consumption of culprits.

Morin proposed that every university devote a chair to human understanding, drawing on the human sciences, literature, poetry and film. Social-emotional learning, school mediation and the use of fiction to cultivate empathy now take up part of that intuition.
